They encircle Vila Adentro, Faro's historic center, with Roman origins. The Arco do Repouso (Arch of Rest) is named after the legend that King D. Afonso III rested there after the conquest of 1249; the neoclassical Arco da Vila (Arch of the Town) is the work of the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri.
